Governance
Departments
The Governing Board encourages parents/guardians and other members of the community to share their time, knowledge and abilities with our students.
Volunteers shall act in accordance with District policies and regulations, as well as any site requirements.
Volunteers shall follow any directions given by the school site principal and other employees of the District.
Each volunteer is required to complete the District Volunteer Application form, and the completed form must be on file with the District office prior to commencement of service. This form includes a requirement for disclosure of any prior criminal convictions. Failure to provide accurate information will result in immediate dismissal.
Each volunteer is required to complete a fingerprint clearance with the California Department of Justice.
Each volunteer must keep his/her TB test up-to-date. The cost for the TB testing is at the expense of the volunteer.
Each volunteer is expected to maintain confidentiality regarding each student and his/her family.
If a volunteer hears about or observes evidence of child abuse, he/she shall report the information to the site principal immediately. Failure to do so will result in immediate dismissal.
Education Code 35.21 provides that a person who is required to register as a sex offender pursuant to Penal Code section 290 shall not serve as a volunteer. Cutler-Orosi Joint Unified School District policy is not to allow volunteers who have been convicted of sex offences, and serious or violent felonies.
Registered sex offenders and persons convicted of serious or violent felonies may not volunteer to serve as chaperones for field trips, dances or any other school activity.
1. When a community member or parent wishes to volunteer in a school or at an activity, the prospective volunteer must complete the Volunteer Application Form. A valid photo identification card and a current negative TB skin test must be attached to the application. The form is then submitted to the school principal for approval. College students wanting to fulfill hours for school work should be sent to the Personnel Department first. (A new form must be completed each year)
2. The form must be completely filled out. Each question must be answered or marked. Incomplete forms will not be processed.
3. The principal and the volunteer must sign the application. When the principal signs the Volunteer Application Form, he/she is indicating that they approve of this volunteer and want him/her on their site to perform the duties indicated. Principals may deny a volunteer.
4. The school Principal or Secretary will submit the completed volunteer application to the District Office.
5. The District Office will contact the volunteer and schedule the appointment for fingerprints.
6. Once the volunteer has cleared, the District Office will contact the volunteer to pick up his/her volunteer badge.
7. All volunteers must wear their ID cards while on campus or at a district event when performing volunteer services.
8. Education Code 35021 provides that a person who is required to register as a sex offender pursuant to Penal Code 290 shall not serve as a volunteer.
9. Cutler-Orosi Joint Unified School District policy does not allow volunteers who have been convicted of sex offences and serious or violent felonies. For any other conviction, the Superintendent or designee has the discretion to deny volunteer service depending on the nature of the conviction as it relates to the volunteer’s suitability and duties.
10. The District reserves the right to limit the number and types of volunteers, the time frame and the classroom(s) served.
11. All volunteers must be cleared by the District Office PRIOR to serving.
